Sperm DNA Fragmentation & Failed IVF Assessment in Abu Dhabi

An elevated sperm DNA fragmentation result needs interpretation alongside the semen analysis and both partners' fertility history. After unsuccessful IVF or ICSI, Dr. Juan Uría can review the male contribution in Abu Dhabi and coordinate next steps with your fertility team. A raised result alone does not explain every failed cycle.

DNA fragmentation tests assess damage to sperm genetic material that a standard semen analysis does not directly measure. Tests use different methods and reference ranges, so percentages from different laboratories are not automatically comparable.

What the assessment involves

Bring the original laboratory reports and your IVF/ICSI treatment summaries.

Treatment

01

Treat an identified cause rather than a laboratory number. A plan may address smoking, relevant illness or a clinically significant varicocele, while avoiding delays that disadvantage the couple's fertility treatment.

02

Antioxidants and testicular sperm retrieval are not automatic next steps. Their potential benefits, uncertainty, costs and risks require an individual discussion with the reproductive team.

Common questions

01Is a DNA fragmentation result of 25% high?

It depends on the assay and laboratory reference range. Bring the full report; the percentage alone is insufficient for a treatment decision.

02Can a normal semen analysis exclude a male factor?

No. It is an important starting point, but selected couples need additional assessment. DNA fragmentation testing is not necessary for everyone.

03Should we assess the male partner after failed IVF or ICSI?

A male review is appropriate alongside assessment of the partner and cycle details. No test can assign blame or guarantee success in the next cycle.

04Does a high result mean I need TESE?

No. Surgery is considered only in selected circumstances after discussing alternatives and the limited evidence. It carries risks and does not guarantee a pregnancy.
